The House of Representatives has strongly denied allegations that lawmakers were bribed with $5,000 each to approve President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State.
Deputy House Spokesman, Hon. Philip Agbese (APC, Benue), dismissed the claims as “false, malicious, and baseless”, stating that the decision was purely patriotic and aimed at restoring peace in Rivers.
“The idea that members were induced with money is nothing but a fabricated lie from the pit of hell,” Agbese declared.
Key House Resolutions on the Emergency Declaration: Legislative Authority: The National Assembly will take over Rivers Assembly’s duties during the emergency period.
Flexible Timeline: Instead of a fixed six-month period, the House advised that the emergency could be lifted sooner if peace is restored.
Mediation Committee: A tripartite committee involving lawmakers, government officials, and key stakeholders will be formed to broker peace.
Agbese also reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to democracy, adding that the House will not succumb to distractions from opposition groups.
