About 18 passengers in a commercial bus, popularly called Danfo yesterday escaped death when a bus driver who turned up the music blaring from the bus stereo, veered off the road and rammed into some shops by the roadside at Alakuko bus-stop.
According to an eyewitness who simply identified herself as Auwal, she saw the driver who was on high speed, ram into a shop. “I was surprised to see the man driving recklessly from a distance, and by the time he got closer to where I was, he had lost control and just drove all the passengers into the shops leaving a few injured while his stereo was still playing loudly. I think the driver was badly injured too as he was immediately rushed away from the scene.”
One of the injured passengers said: “We were shouting at him to slow down. Instead of heeding to our pleas, he rather increased the volume of the music he was playing and drove like death was calling him”.
Also, in another incident, a woman returning from church on Sunday with her three children had an accident at Isheri-Ijegun road, Ijegun. Eyewitnesses said the driver momentarily lost concentration and control of the car on the highway, which led to the car plunging through the road median into the lane of oncoming vehicles.
The occupants of the car were left with severe injuries while they were immediately rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of Isolo General Hospital for treatment.
