Dr Osmond Ukanacho, 2015 governorship candidate of the United Peoples Party (UPP) has berated the Owerri people for not being serious in their quest of getting power in Imo state.
Ukanacho, and a strong supporter of Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, Accord governorship candidate, who stated this while interacting with Newsmen in Owerri on Friday, disclosed that Owerri people would have had an easy ride to Douglas House if the state incumbent governor had anointed somebody from the zone as his successor.
According to him, no zone will produce a governor without the backing of the incumbent governor or the support of the federal government, adding that only such support can give Owerri people a governor in the present Nigeria.
He also stressed that if Owerri people are serious about getting a taste of power in the state, they must rally round and project a single candidate instead of sabotaging themselves by pluralizing the chance.
“So what I have told them and I will continue to tell them is, in a Nigeria context, if you must produce a governor, we must have the backing of the sitting government in the state or from the federal government.
“If the government of the day had produced a candidate from Owerri Zone and backed him up, all this narrative would have changed because he will fight, he will support. So we are where we are today because the sitting government or governor is not supporting an Owerri man.
“Also, having over 20 candidates from Owerri zone shows how unserious we are about Owerri project. For me, Owerri people are not ready to take over power in this state. If they are ready, they will not have over 20 individual, running for the same governorship position.” Ukanacho said.
