Members of the Imo State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a motion urging the state Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, to sack the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Ethelbath Ibeabuchi, and other members.
The decision was based on a motion moved by the Deputy Majority Leader, Ken Agbim (Ahiazu Mbaise) and seconded by Mike Iheanetu (Aboh Mbaise).
Agbim alleged that the commission conducted the “worst election in the history of Imo State in August 2018.”
He claimed that instead of conducting an election, the commission selected people and made them chairmen and councillors of local government areas.
The decision came three days after the lawmakers passed a motion urging the state governor to suspend the chairmen and councillors.
Agbim said, “The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission conducted the worst and most disgraceful local government election in the history of Imo State in August 2018.
“It was rather a selection process instead of an election. We should therefore urge the governor to remove the chairman and his members and appoint credible people as their replacements.”
When the Speaker, Chinedu Offor, put the motion to vote, members unanimously supported it.
The state governor also conveyed a letter to the lawmakers urging them confirm Ndukwe Azuoma as the Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney-General of the state.
The Speaker, who read the governor’s letter, quoted Ihedioha as saying that his action is in line with relevant sections of the Nigerian constitution.
He, therefore, appointed a committee headed by Agbim to look into the governor’s request.
