A notable aspirant to the Governorship of Imo State, name withheld, has described the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as stinking and steadily sinking. The odious state of the party, according to the ex-guber hopeful, will not encourage any decent politician to remain in the stinking ship or like a housefly, follow it to the grave.
The aspirant who spoke under condition of anonymity explained that the offensive aroma of PDP is responsible for the mass exodus and defections from the party by those who have names, integrity and reputation to protect. Insisting that once the corpse oozes with bad and putrefying odour, the best friend who was always closer and good confidant to the deceased even more than the bereaved, will always take to his heels abandoning the corpse and so it has come to be with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
According to the prominent political diplomat, from Mbaitolu LGA of Imo State, who took the contest for the PDP flag bearer by storm, “the only way out of the present mess in which PDP finds itself, is to merge with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in order to form the new People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in order to remain relevant in Nigeria’s political firmament”. He regretted that the last Governorship primary election of the party (PDP) in Imo state ended up shamefully with one of the candidates stealing void votes to emerge winner and flag bearer and wondered what could have become of such a government that is so insensitive to the outcry of delegates who felt aggrieved that the outcome of the party primary election was not a reflection of their votes. Besides, the situation whereby delegates to the PDP primary election demanded for and collected as much as N1.5 million each from an aspirant before casting their votes for him only for the outcome to be subverted by another desperate aspirant who must have dubiously and diabolically manipulated the election result is a disgrace not only to the party but to Igbo people who now see political contest in terms of how much they make and not the prospects of rendering selfless services or accruable dividends of democracy to the people.
Explaining why he would not want to be identified or associated with PDP anymore, he said that doom awaits those left in the sinking and stinking ship except they are wiser to embrace the new move to merge PDP and APGA to form PDA.
He however called for concerted efforts on the side of the yet to be inaugurated State House of Assembly so to serve as the only semblance of opposition in the state, now that PDP is almost dead. He could not imagine how a party that calls itself the largest party in Africa before now, could not follow due process in replacing the offices of State Chairman/Deputy, State Publicity Secretary and others.
Speaking to Community Watchdog, a Board of Trustees (BOT) member of the party supported the idea of a merger between PDP and APGA if only that will remove the offensive odour that has enveloped the PDP, known severally for sharing common wealth among party chieftains while the rest of the populace suffer abject poverty.
On the newly set-up post-election assessment committee led by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremmadu with Governors, Godswill Akpabio, Chief Theodore Orji, Damkwambo of Gombe State, Nyesom Nwike and Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, as members, the veteran guber aspirant regretted that those who caused the defeat of PDP at the elections were the same people charged with the task of assessing the performance of the party. The committee members as contended by the foremost governorship aspirant lack the capacity and credibility to add value to the party as presently constituted.
In another development, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh was recently quoted as saying that the party will not contemplate changing its name in the face of the numerous agitations to this effect. He regretted that some overzealous members could push for a change of name as a panacea to the present misfortune and advised all those who are not comfortable with the party to leave rather than fan the embers of acrimony, rancor and bitterness.
