The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has issued a stern warning to Internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, and “shady leaders,” telling the mentioned parties that they are being monitored and will face due punishment.
The anti-graft agency made the statement on Friday via its official Facebook account, writing that “EFCC will get you anywhere, anytime. Shun Financial Crimes in all [its] forms…”
A part of the agency’s message, which was worded in Nigerian Pidgin English, fingered cyber-scammers and unscrupulous politicians as causing the country reputational damage abroad.
“This na for the shady leaders wey dey carry our money go Overseas. This na for the Yahoo Yahoo boys wey dey spoil our Country name Overseas. For the lifestyle wey you dey love, make you know say there is an eye watching you.”
EFCC earlier this month warned that hotels guilty of accomodating internet fraudsters are liable to prosecution, following media reports which faulted the agency’s operation at a hotel in the Lekki Area of Lagos.
The agency said that the actions of such hoteliers contravene Section 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act.
The PUNCH reported on July 18 that the Kano Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrested 20 suspected internet fraudsters in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
On July 5, The PUNCH likewise reported the arrested of six suspected internet fraudsters in Enugu by the Enugu zonal officials of EFCC.
