The apex socio-cultural group in Owerri zone known as Olu Owerri has taken a swipe at a group which recently issued a statement, purporting to disqualify eligible leaders from a part of the zone from vying for the 2023 Imo governorship election.

Chief Martin Opara, National President of Olu Owerri, in a press statement issued in Owerri, made available to Nigerian Watchdog Newspaper yesterday, described the group as “faceless and its plots, divisive.”

The statement reads in part;”our attention has been drawn to a malicious report, sponsored by enemies of Owerri Zone, through a faceless group, purporting to caution Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, against contesting governorship position in the 2023.

“Olu Owerri, the apex socio-political umbrella body of Owerri Zone, saddled with protecting and indeed advancing the collective interests of Owerri Zone, strongly condemns in its entirety, the calculated attempt to cause disaffection and division among the the people of the Zone.

“It is important to state for the avoidance of doubt that there is no group by the name, Owerri Zonal Development Union, known among the various pressure or interest groups in Owerri Zone.

“It is noteworthy, that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, within the seven months he held sway as Governor of Imo State, performed creditably. And Owerri Zone is very proud of the outstanding achievements of his administration.

“As 2023 general election approaches, Owerri Zone will neither lower the standard nor go for less. We will as usual, present the best for the governorship seat to ensure that Imo State is truly rebuilt for the general good of the people.

“We wish to therefore warn faceless groups and purveyors of false news to henceforth desist from further attempts at sowing seeds of discord among the good of Owerri Zone”.
