Former Manchester United striker, Dwight Yorke has warned Anthony Martial that he must ‘buckle down’ to save his career at the club.
Yorke believes Martial needs to prove his ‘immense talent’ in order to find his way back into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team at Old Trafford.
Martial was handed his first Premier League start of the season in Man United’s 1-1 draw with Everton last Saturday and justified his selection by scoring his side’s only goal of the encounter.
But with Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani ahead of Martial in Solskjaer’s pecking order of forwards and Marcus Rashford set to return from injury, the France international is struggling for game time.
“When you play for this club [Manchester United] and you are not doing the business and your form dips for whatever reason, you are going to be under scrutiny,” Yorke told Goal.
“He [Martial] has got to buckle down really if he has a future at this football club.
“He’s undoubtedly got immense talent and all the attributes we like to see in an attacking player and there is no question he can be that vital player for us, but at the moment, he is not in the squad and he’s got to find a way to get back into the team.”
“He’s been a bit of a mixed bag, to be fair,” he added.
