Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has directed the Commissioner of Transport, Uno Etim Uno and his Environment and Solid Minerals counterpart, Mr. Charles Udoh to commence enforcement of the government’s order to curb roadside trading and loading of vehicles.

The Commissioners were handed the mandate during the state executive council meeting presided over by the governor on Wednesday

Mr Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, in a statement on Thursday said the affected ministries were to ensure that all illegal markets and loading of vehicles that have obstructed the free flow of traffic during rush hours were removed.

“The Executive Council has declared the commencement of enforcement of state government order to curb the menace of illegal roadside trading and loading of vehicles which, has continued to constitute a nuisance to road users during rush hours.

“The Governor, in his leniency, had provided two weeks moratorium for necessary sensitization after the initial sounding of the order and has now directed the immediate commencement of enforcement by the relevant government agencies.

“The Council charged the Commissioner for Transport and the Commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals to ensure free flow of traffic, by way of ensuring that illegal markets on major roads and illegal bus stops are removed”the statement reads in part.

The Information Commissioner stressed that all illegal tenants demanding relocation have no case because they are illegal tenants

“The issue of relocation has been that which a lot of people ask, but people must know that for relocation to occur, you must have been a legal tenant. A person who is an illegal tenant does not expect a quit notice”, the statement added.

The council meeting further ordered the immediate recommencement of construction works in various parts of the state where work was stopped because of the rains.

These include the construction of 2.1Km Ukpong street, 2.1Km Effiong Esang street with 800m discharge drain in Oron Local Government Area, as well as 21.5Km Ikot Ayan Ediene-Ikot Ntia-Urua Nnaira-Ikot Nseyen-Nkowot-Nung Ukim road with 45m span bridge in Ikono.
