Some members of Oyo State House of Assembly have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to fulfill the promises he made to the victims of the Igangan violent attacks.
The lawmakers made this disclosure during their plenary held on Tuesday in Ibadan.
Our correspondent recalls that Igangan, one of the towns in Ibarapa North Local Government Area in the state, had last year witnessed a series of violent attacks.
DAILY POST recalls that some innocent citizens and farmers were killed in one of the attacks.
Our correspondent recalls that prominent among the attacks was the killing of about 20 people, who were attacked at midnight by some suspected Fulani herdsmen.
DAILY POST gathered that some shops, houses, petroleum stations and the palace of the traditional ruler of the town, Asigangan of Igangan were burnt down.
The invasions resulted in apprehension that forced parents to withdraw their wards from schools in the town in June last year.
DAILY POST reports that the appeal to Makinde to fulfill his promises was sequel to a motion brought to the House on Tuesday by Peter Ojedokun who represents Ibarapa North/Central State Constituency.
Ojedokun in his motion maintained that there is a need for the state to support and fulfill the promises made to the victims.
He said, “Note that Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State experienced series of attacks from suspected Fulani herders and armed bandits in year 2021.
“This heightened tension and insecurity in the area with many residents living in palpable fear. Further notes that the situation was further aggravated and bloodier on the 5th of June, 2021 when the community was invaded overnight by the same suspected Fulani herders and armed bandits. The assailants attacked the community with guns and other dangerous weapons leaving in their trail death of many residents.
“Many houses, shops, filling stations and vehicles including lorries loaded with goods were razed completely. It was during this barbaric and violent attack that the palace of the Asigangan of Iganganland was burnt beyond repairs.
“Few weeks after the invasion precisely on 15th July, 2021, there was another attack. This time around, the Commander of “Amotekun” Corps in Ibarapa North Local Government and four others were killed”.
Other lawmakers who spoke in support of the motion, Akeem Obadara and Akeem Adedibu, added that the promises, when fulfilled, would go a long way to cushion the effects of the attacks on the victims.
The lawmakers, after listening to their colleagues, then urged the state government to provide credit and loan facilities to individuals who lost their goods and properties during the attack.
The lawmakers appealed to the Oyo State Government to work through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport as well as Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters towards rebuilding the palace of the Asigangan burnt by the assailants.
